It’s Friday night; you scored a date with that hottie you had been chatting with and you studied their Facebook page. You have prepared yourself for this night mentally, but it is also important to prepare physically as well since first impressions can make or break your first date.
Do you know that attractive people are immediately associated with positive attributes such as being more social, less selfish, and more intelligent than those who are viewed as less attractive? This also pertains to the online dating world as those who had more attractive pictures on their dating sites were viewed as having more positive profiles. If you did find your date online, it is even more important to make sure your physical appearance is on point as your date will be comparing how you look in person to how you look online.
Let’s be real here, no one wants to kiss someone who looks like they haven’t showered in a week or who smells like a dirty locker room. Take a warm shower, use your favourite shampoo/conditioner, and use a nice smelling body wash. If you use lotion normally, then slather on a nice but subtle scent right after you dry off as the body will better absorb the lotion quickly and lock in moisture for an extra smooth affect.
Depending on your preference, you may want to spray your favourite smelling cologne or perfume. If you don’t have one, you may want to consider taking a trip to the store to pick out your new favourite fragrance (BONUS: smell is usually linked to memory, meaning if your date smells your fragrance somewhere else, they may immediately associate that smell with you.)
Now is not the time to skimp on shaving. Ladies, make sure you use a new, clean razor to avoid any ghastly razor bumps and use a thick moisturising shaving cream. If you get professionally waxed or use a hair remover lotion at home, make sure to do this in advance to give your skin a chance to heal. A day or two before the date you also may want to pluck or wax your eyebrows.
Men, remove that five o’clock shadow or neck beard and trim or remove any other body hair you may feel self conscious about (back hair, shoulders, etc.) Make sure to use a clean sharp razor and a nice aftershave. Also, take a second glance in the mirror to double check for any stray noise hairs, and trim if needed but do not wax them.
Grooming is not all physical; manners and proper etiquette are also very important when going on a date. Make sure you have enough cash for the night, make sure to say thank you when needed, and don’t text through dinner.
The most important thing to remember is to be your authentic true self and have fun! While looks and personal hygiene may help initially attract that special someone, you will have better odds at keeping them for the long run if you are being true to yourself.
