Who’s off the hook for Christmas gift giving?

If you haven’t yet finished your Christmas shopping, and in case you’re still tossing up whether or not to buy a gift for someone you’ve only been dating for a little while, here is what our members had to say.

If a couple has been dating for under one month, they have one less gift to worry about buying this Christmas. According to one of our surveys of over 1,000 RSVP members, the vast majority of people in new dating relationships do NOT expect a gift if they have only been dating for one month or less. After the one month mark, however, men and women’s expectations do begin to diverge. Women, it seems, would like a gift after one month, and they would expect the person they are dating to spend between $20-$50. Men, on the other hand, still do not expect to receive a gift until they have been dating someone for at least 3 to 6 months.

After 6 months, expectations align again and both parties expect to receive a gift valued at around $50-$100. As the length of the relationship increases, so does the expected spending scale.

After a year, however, men expect to receive a more valuable gift than women.

Our advice to those in new relationships is that very few men and women expect the person they are dating to spend any money at all on a gift at Christmas time. We think the best thing to do is to go out and have fun with whoever it is you’re dating. Make the most of the warm weather and just spend some time together. If you feel you simply must buy someone a gift though, we now know roughly what you should spend – and you can definitely keep the cost to around $20 to $50 if you’ve only been dating for three months. Have a safe and happy festive season! We look forward to seeing what 2019 brings all of our members.
