Micro-cheating: What is it and are you guilty of doing it?

We’re only weeks into 2018, and there’s already a new dating term to add to the lexicon; micro-cheating.

What is micro-cheating you ask? Well as opposed to regular cheating, which generally involves being intimate with someone outside of your relationship, micro-cheating is defined as the small actions that may indicate you’re interested in someone other than your partner.

Need more clarification? Dating expert, Melanie Schilling, recently told HuffPost Australia that examples of micro-cheating could be simply talking to someone in a certain way on social media, or not fully revealing your relationship status when chatting with other people.

“You might be engaging in micro-cheating if you secretly connect with another guy/girl on social media; if you share private jokes; if you downplay the seriousness of your relationship to another guy/girl; or if you enter their name under a code in your phone," Schilling said.

"These are all signs that you are conducting a 'covert flirtation' and keeping it from your partner. If you feel you have something to hide, ask yourself why.”

She went on to explain that the key thing that turns simple conversations from just that into examples of micro-cheating is secrecy.

When it comes to signs of micro-cheating to look out for, Schilling told HuffPost: "If your partner is having private conversations or online chats that he/she quickly shuts down when you enter the room; if they are reaching out to an ex to mark an anniversary or other significant shared, intimate event; perhaps they are offering compliments to other guys/girls that they don't say to you; or maybe they meet up with someone of the opposite sex under the guise of a business meeting, when you discover no business was actually done... these are all signs to look out for.”

Since the concept of micro-cheating first started being discussed, many have been quick to question if some of the things claimed to be micro-cheating are even relationship ending offences. However, the general consensus is that if you deem your partner to be a micro-cheater, then it may be likely they’ll graduate from the odd subtle or covert flirtation to something more serious down the line. But at the end of the day, only you know what your limits and deal breakers are in a relationship.

Do you think micro-cheating is a real thing? Or is it just another dating buzzword?
