Keeping secrets is a bad call – just ask Trump

Over this next four-year period it is likely that Donald J. Trump will being keeping a secret or two. One was recently revealed to the world, in the form of his 2005 tax return. The Donald was adamant that he was going to share his tax returns on his own terms, but the pesky fake news peddling media got their hands on two pages of the return and quickly went about revealing the details to the world.

However, the morale of this story isn’t share your financial information with the wider public, it’s about keeping secrets and why this won’t go down well in the dating world. Who would have thought Trump would become a great relationship teacher?

These are the reasons why we think keeping secrets is a bad idea, and no: ‘it could bring down the free world’ didn’t make the cut.

It could blow up in your face:

Okay, so we’re not talking about the nuclear codes with this one, rather keeping secrets in a relationship means there’s the possibility that the secret could come out. Even if it’s a secret that you don’t think is a big deal, you need to evaluate why you’re not telling your partner, because there’s usually a reason. You also need to think about how you would feel if the situation was reversed, because if you would be hurt, then take that as a guide that you should share what you’re keeping back. In all likely hood, sharing the truth, will strengthen your bond or it may mean you go in different directions, but if this is the case it’s probably for the best in the long-run.

It breeds mistrust:

Trust is the cornerstone of any relationship. It needs to be. If you don’t trust your partner, it’s unlikely you’re going to create a lasting connection. If the secret is uncovered rather than being shared, not only will it go badly, but it may be hard to rebuild trust in the relationship.

Being open and honest is liberating:

One of the best things about being in a relationship is feeling that you’re a team and as though the person you’re dating is truly opening up to you. So, don’t let secrets (or tax returns) hold you back from experiencing one of the pleasures that relationships bring. Open up and reveal your full hand, because you never know, it could leave your relationship in a better place.
